My tour of the Cusco healthcare system

The other evening I had a very odd experience with my new winged friend – Carlos the moth. While taking a walk in the early evening to Christo Blanco (Cusco’s version of Rio’s Christ the Redeemer) with some of my friends this little guy decided to try and make his new home my inner ear. It was likely totally by accident as Christo Blanco is lit up like a beacon and there were tons of bugs flying everywhere. I’m sure he was only trying to reach en’light’enment when he flew into my ear. However, as I’m sure you can imagine I was not as fond of his new home as he was and resulted in me looking like I suddenly had a seizure or was doing my own solo interpretation of the Harlem Shake.

At this point my friends were extremely confused and entertained by my sudden desire to bust a move. One my friends was so taken by a fit of giggles that she was doubled over laughing – I’m pretty sure there were a few tears too.

After Carlos had settled in and stopped twitching (only temporarily – he started up every once in a while which resulted in more seizures and bursts of laughter from my friends) my friends tried getting him out by pouring some water into my ear but he wasn’t going anywhere. We then walked down to a small clinic in town and to try and have one of the medics try and remove him. However, as it was getting pretty late the only medic that was available was pretty young and didn’t really know what he was doing. He actually asked me to look up the procedure on my phone – flush it out using a syringe filled with water.

After a few squirts in the ear with some freezing cold water and Carlos only ending up deeper in my ear the medic decided that this was out of his league. I then was taken via ambulance (first time for me) to an on-call specialist in a nearby hospital. When the specialist first took a look in my ear he thought that there wasn’t much of anything left. However, after some lubrication and a couple litres of warm water Carlos came out of his new home. Meet Carlos below!
