Weekend in Calca – Festival of the Virgin de Asunta

I have been extremely fortunate to become friends with a local family in Cusco. My boss at LAFF is marrying into a Cuscan family and as I am settling into Cusco this family has basically made me a ‘part of the furniture’. They frequently invite me over for lunch and last weekend took me out to the old family homestead for the festival of the Virgin de Asunta. The festival was full of music, masked dancers, and more food and drink than you can keep track of. The dances were probably my favourite part. The names of the dances were Quechuan and many of them poked fun at the Spanish conquistadors.
